Lights Out was a mixed experience for me. On the one hand, the banter and humour gave the story more charm than I expected, keeping it from being just page after page of smut. But on the other, the balance between what the book promised and what it delivered felt off. It’s marketed as a dark romance, yet beyond the heroine not seeing his face, nothing about it truly felt dark—if anything, he came across as tender, caring, and even gentle. I found myself wishing for more genuine mystery and shadow rather than simply being told it was there.
The male lead’s “genius” was written in such a forced way that it stretched believability, and several moments veered into unintentional comedy. While the book started strong, with solid characterisation and sharp chemistry, it quickly slid into cringy dialogue, over-explained details, and a sense of dragging as it tried to pack in too much. Ultimately, the story fluctuated between intriguing writing with substance and eye-rolling moments that pulled me out of it.

4.5-4.75- I wish I would have read this book before I read the second. Going into these books I wasn’t sure what to think but I had heard good things from others- again there a a number of trigger warnings and high on the spice scale- but I did enjoy these characters and seeing the story progress.

I felt like I had to read this bc everyone online has been raving about it. Was it good? No. Was it entertaining? Mostly. I will say, I liked this one better than Haunting Adeline. So much of the dialogue was just a little too cringe.

Loved the narrators, they really brought the snark and sarcasm to life. I did enjoy the characters, and felt like they were well rounded, although they wouldn’t shut up about how hot and fit each other were. Like I get it, you work out. The plot was meh and for a “kink heavy” book, it was (up to the 46%) actually pretty vanilla. Just didn’t like where the plot was going so decided to dnf.
