Whoa! A story set in Gaddafi's Libya and Assad's Syria, told from a child's perspective!
None of the minor incidents or the side-plots shock you because you know that stuff has happened but they still appal you, and I think the tone of the narrative does this brilliant job - not trivializing the serious situations yet telling it in an as-a-matter-fact-comic tone.

In order to tell this story as satire coupled with criticism, I can't tell if the author had to focus unilaterally more on his Syrian father's utter failures to get his point across, but he missed something big and important in the portrayal of his French mother in The Arab of the Future. She's practically written as an afterthought, when in reality, she's the elephant in the room, in nearly every panel. Still, while this lacked the heart and punch of Persepolis, The Arab of the Future was well-paced, emotionally rendered, and an interesting perspective and story. I probably will pick up the sequel.

igasuguseid mõtteid tekitab sellise raamatu lugemine praegusel ajal.
