DID NOT FINISH

DNF (audiobook)
I've enjoyed this series, and I was into this story until the reason for Lauren and Mike's breakup is revealed. Not only is it unnecessary, it's rather ridiculous in my opinion. Also, I'm not a fan of Rock Engle's narration. His delivery is lazy, like he just woke up.

I still love ya, Sarina. This one just wasn't for me.

This was definitely my least favourite in the series. I didn’t like Lauren or Mike until near the end. The relationship felt forced and like the feelings weren’t there, instead it felt like it was just about the sex, especially from Mike. I would have liked more of a connection and maybe some pining. It seemed rushed when they decided to be a couple who did more than have sex. This just wasn’t the strong relationship Bowen usually delivers.

2.5 Stars. Not really my thing (single dad romance)

This story!! Mike and Lauren have a really painful history and the opportunity to heal and make a beautiful future. I would have loved to see Mike grovel for Lauren more, but understand the pace that their reunion was written at.

Side note: CANNOT WAIT FOR NATE AND BECCA'S BOOK. OH. MY. GOD.

This did not feel like a romance. Mike seems like a bad person for dumping his girlfriend and not giving her a reason why. I didn't like the way he would talk about his wife (she cheats on him, they separate, she gets sick with a terminal illness).

The hero of this one is kinda skeevy. He's super selfish in a self-martyr kinda way and never takes no for an answer. It's pretty gross.

1.75/5 stars

*groans in frustration* well this was a straight up dumpster fire that made me crave for the sweet, sweet arms of death herself. That .75 comes solely because I kind of... appreciate (??) some aspects of Lauren’s personality; at least in the earlier stages of the book. Mike Beacon was a garbage human being who reminded me very quickly why I despised reading conventional romances for a while. The fact that this self-grandiose and selfish man is built up as this great guy and good father who “simply made a few mistakes. Please forgive him!!” is absolute bullshit of the highest tire and thank God I did not own a physical copy of this book because I almost definitely would’ve ripped it to shreds. Oh, and Nate and Rebecca’s side plot was weird as hell but still adds to that .75 increase since I love them with more intensity than I thought. Or maybe because the other so-called couples were just that uncharismatic. One last note, in the year of our lord 2019, can we please, for the love of God and everything holy and pure in this world, stop using ex and/or dead wives and young children as “obstacles” to romances. These are real humans with real worth and real emotions that have real human impacts rather than simple story points to some horny couple being selfish in their own terms. I feel absolutely terrible for Mike’s young daughter. Imagine growing up with such a shitty dad (well I don’t really need to imagine on that part myself), who decides that impregnating another woman and having another child is far more important than fixing the relationship with the existing child. God I hate Mike Beacon. This whole charade of a paragraph has now gone on for far too long so I’ll just leave this here: this was fucking terrible.

3.5 stars. I liked Mike and Lauren’s story, however, I felt there was way too much back and forth. I also felt like Nate and Becca overshadowed the whole book.
