I really hated this book. Within the first couple chapters, genocide is being erased and joked about by the MMC. The British occupied and starved Irish people. It wasn’t a potato famine. It was the Great Hunger and there’s nothing remotely funny about it especially coming from a Brit. Later it was insinuated that the American with Irish ancestry FMC had a dad who likes drinking. Yeah, that’s a harmful stereotype. Author also used the “E word” slur to describe the Inuit. Beyond all of these problemtic things, the story is soulless and unbelievable. There is no reality where a 25 yr old is negotiating that position with a political campaign for President. When you work a campaign you are literally working around the clock 7 days a week. Maybe don’t make her 25 if you want that to be believable? It’s also laughable that a 25 yr old would be explaining how public schools are funded to someone who has worked in politics for presumably a decade minimum. Author also wrongly asserted that Ohio has a better public education program than California. They are about the same and California supplements Ohio’s education with federal dollars. Was literally no research done to write this book? Julia Whelan was one of my favorite narrators. I don’t know how I’ll listen to her narration the same again.

The first few chapters were a little slow and I almost gave up on it. The cover is slightly misleading. It’s mostly a romance, not a story about a year at Oxford. Although it was not what I was expecting, I loved it. There were a few spicy scenes where I wish I could’ve vidangeled, but it didn’t dominate the book. Overall, it was a great story, Whelan does an amazing job narrating.
