Ummm I kind of liked it? I enjoyed the setting, characters, and plot. Docked one star for the writing style - definitely too verbose in some parts. I swear every other sentence was a run-on. I felt like I enjoyed this book more when I purposefully was not catching every word.
I was also surprised there was no glossary for the random Chinese. It worked for me as I speak Chinese but I wonder how others who don’t felt about it.
Overall this book took much longer than I expected to get through, so taking a break to read something easier being picking up the next in the series!

I just couldn’t get in to it. I normally like the author, so maybe I’ll try reading it instead of listening to the audio book.

This book had so much potential but just really fell short for me. First, this was being billed as an imaginative Romeo and Juliet retelling. You really have to work to make that work. The tension of romance was not there at all. The setting, 1920s Shanghai, should have been lush with detail, but the only descriptive scenes were when people were ripping their necks open and blood was pouring down the streets. I never fully understood the politics of the book, why were these two gangs so at odds? "Ancient blood feud" is all you really get for a back story. I went back and forth with liking Juliette and Roma. There were so many other characters, I lost count. The monster reveal finale is really lacking. I kept waiting for something big to happen and it just never did.

Full transparency, I DNF'd this book halfway through. I am giving it 3 stars because the writing is decent, it's simply not my cup of tea. If you like family feud, R+J type romances, this would be a good choice for you. Turns out, it's not my preference.

I know people like this, but I’ve been trying to read it for two years and I’ve not been able to get past chapter 3 or 4. Maybe I’ll come back to it and be pleasantly surprised. I hope, because I do adore the author.
