I absolutely adored Scout's narrative voice: the balance of childishness and maturity was excellent. The plot was well-written, and the book was engaging. However, it was a little difficult to get into, and the datedness of the language means I'm pretty sure I missed a couple of pretty significant things.

While I do think this is an incredibly important novel, it is still flawed. One of the best decisions Lee made was to make Scout the narrator. Seeing the world through the eyes of a small child forces the reader to reconcile the world Scout is living in as compared to our own. I think it is an important read, but we must problematize its author's history and its story as well. It is not without fault.

*RECOMMENDED
I first read this when I was in elementary, and again in my first year of high school. I haven't read it since but what's seared into my mind is learning through the same lens Scout had as a kid of roughly the same age. This had really left an impression on my younger self.
