A scrapbook of sorts containing lyrics, poetry, random journal scribblings, photos and more from Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine. I like Florence+ the Machine but am not a mega-fan, but this was still interesting to browse through.

Who wouldn’t fall in love with this beautiful book? Even if you’re not a fan of Florence + the Machine you would find this book magical.

A new appreciation can be taken on with her song writing seeing her lyrics in the written form. It also made me revisit her entire discography.

This book is an absolute delight!! I spent a couple of months just reading and re-reading it, flipping through it, smelling it, and humming the songs to myself. I wish Florence would continue publishing stuff and grace us with her remarkable talent ❤️❤️❤️

"I don’t know what makes a song a song and a poem a poem: they have started to bleed into each other at this stage."

Florence is a fantastic songwriter, and maybe that's why she uses her poetry like escapism as a result and by comparison, the poems in this book lack the artistry of her lyrics.

Extracts of the two poems I like the best.

SONG
"...
What would I say
If it was just me
Not full of choirs, singing fucking constantly
How would I speak
If the song left me
..."

AMERICAN MOTHER
"...
I wish I had more of your staunch American character,
Strong, bold, and unflinching, like the desert, or a New
York skyscraper.
But I am more like the English weather
Unpredictable and ever changing,
Prone to downpours.
Battered by sudden winds – thin-skinned, eye-bagged and
always cold,
Proud and leaking.
Did you think you would give birth to such an English
creature,
..."

2 stars because I already knew her fantastic lyrics (90% of the book) and it was her poetry that I wanted to read.

I love Florence Welch way too much. She’s been one of my favorite singers/song writers for years. But man, I wanted a bit more analysis on her lyrics and way more poetry and images than what we got. But it’s still nice, I guess. Just not memorable enough.

Felt like it was basically just a book of her songs... Could have just listened to her albums and re-reading the same chorus four times was useless and annoying, really took me out of what would have been (with a bit of editing) a cool poetry book. Decent photographs though.
