With each book of this series, you get to find out more and more about the magic and the different beings connected to it. I liked the setting of this book and the plot in it was both interesting and fun to follow along. And it also gave some hints to things to come. Looking forward to reading the next book.

Interesting structure!
The mid book resolution and second half wrap-up-cum-actual-resolution worked for me. The main twist isn't a great surprise, but the delivery and shading on it are both good.
I prefer to way this one stays more focused than the previous entries. Yes there are side plots that connect to bigger stories, but the main plot is direct and sharply written.

I didn't enjoy this one as much as the previous four. The plot was loopy, and that's before you even start in on the evil unicorns. The narrative rambles, much like the countryside it is set in. The minor characters fail utterly to matter or impress and the major characters hardly fare better: Peter and Bev's hook-up should have been a highlight, but it felt anticlimactic. The overwhelming feeling here was one of 'meh' and I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that Lesley and the Faceless Man barely even feature--you could easily skip FS and not miss out on the greater story arc. It reads like a filler.

On a more positive note, Peter is as witty as ever (and as emotionally repressed, if you were worried). We get some background info on Nightingale and what's locked up beneath the Folly, and some clarity on what Molly is (though not on what she had been doing on Peter's computer COME ON). Aaronovitch's take on fairies was interesting. But overall, a bit of a disappointment. I really hope the next book picks up the plotty goodness again. And clarifies Nightingale's sexual orientation/relationship status because the ambiguity is driving me nuts.
