Auch der fünfte Band der Reihe hat mir gut gefallen. Wie bereits gewohnt, bekommt man eine Mischung aus trockenem Humor, Krimi und Fantasy, die mir sehr zusagt und die unterhaltsame Lesestunden bietet. Der Fall an sich war wirklich interessant und hier ist es wirklich gelungen, eine scheinbar normale Ermittlung mit übernatürlichen Elementen auszustatten. Die Reaktionen der anderen Polizisten auf Peters Vorgehen und seine Theorien waren unglaublich komisch, aber auch, wie er als Stadtmensch mit dem Landleben zurechtkam, war unterhaltsam.
Da es um Kinder ging, war der Fall natürlich besonders brisant und man war als Leser gespannt, ob alles gut ausgehen würde, aber natürlich war ich auch neugierig, inwiefern Magie involviert ist. Dabei gab es einige Wendungen, die ich nicht erwartet hatte, gerade gegen Ende, und ich mochte auch, wie der Autor mit den gängigen Klischees über Fantasywesen spielt und sie ins komplette Gegenteil verkehrt. Dennoch muss ich sagen, dass ich den Mittelteil ein bisschen zäh fand und auch die Konfrontation am Ende sich etwas zu schnell aufgelöst hat. Davon abgesehen war der Krimi für mich jedoch sehr zufriedenstellend.
Von den bereits bekannten und vertrauten Hauptcharakteren spielen eigentlich nur Peter und Beverly. Das war ein bisschen schade, da ich die anderen Charaktere - gerade Nightingale - besonders mag und gerne mehr von ihnen gesehen hätte, aber Aaronovitch hat es geschafft, sie trotzdem präsent wirken zu lassen und dem Leser ein paar interessante neue Hintergrundinformationen über sie zu geben. Vor allem die Entwicklung um Lesley ist sehr vielversprechend und ich bin gespannt, wie es im nächsten Band weitergehen wird.

A very enjoyable read. Peter gets called off his manor to investigate the disappearance of two little girls out in the countryside, as you'd expect being a bit out of his depth and comfort zone doesn't hold him back for long and he's soon innovating and scientific methoding his way through the investigation.
Peter's mind is fascinating, and his insights into policing and the world around him are as entertaining and sharp as ever. I missed some of my favourite bit characters, left behind in London, but the new players were very well realised and likeable. The descriptions of architecture, local history and folklore were also quite interesting, informative without being intrusive.
In short of you've enjoyed the other books in the series up to this point, I'm sure you'll like this as well. I feel the ending leaves a bit to be desired, but the journey is well worth it.
I read the kindle version, the audiobook isn't out yet but provided Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is narrating I'll definitely snatch that up, the man has such a beautiful voice and his past narration has fitted peter's character perfectly.

Out of London and into the country. Why are the foxgloves doing so well in non-acidic soil? Is this an important plot point? I'm not gonna tell. What about Leslie? Fairies, unicorns, changelings, and country folk. As well as artisanal mutton. All makes for a very good story. I hope Aaronovitch keeps this universe going for a whole bunch of books.
