This book was excellent. It might be because I just recently read 1984, but the theme of rewriting history really struck home with me. I really felt for Brodeck as an outsider and his feelings of loss: for his life before he was taken to the work camp, for his wife who has retreated into herself, for his town that used to be full of respectful people.

Intermittently hard to read, for a variety of reasons. (I did have a hard time telling some of the side characters apart. Is this a flaw with the book itself, is it because I just didn't feel sufficiently gripped, or is it something else? Who knows?)

exquisitely written - reminded me a lot of Austerlitz in the way it seamlessly blends memories into this porous account of the recent past and the trauma of the war
