I thought this book was stupid. Abigail sucks.

Although masterfully written, paced and structured, The Crucible shows the flaws of the era it was written more and more. Although a depiction of the times of the Salem witch trials, Miller still holds many similarities between the context of those times and the times in which the play was written. I hoped that this play would give more depth and perspective towards the women who were the main victims of this absurd craze of finger pointing. Unfortunately, Miller offers almost none of that. Each character is more or less there to serve the plot and push the narrative forward, and because of that, there is not one character to truly feel connected to, sympathize with or understand on a deeper level. I may dig deeper into the time period of the witch trials to better understand the context of the plot, but for now, this was undoubtedly well written, but ignorant to the importance of the misogyny to be the reasoning behind these historical events.

It was pretty good.

This was sadly compelling and relevant. The lengths people would go to prove anything right and save face to do it did not cheer me up when I turn to look for the source in the real world. It seems the real events, the fantasy, and the modern day don’t give us much hope for moving beyond the perils of the Crucible any time soon. How many witches would we have burned if we had Instagram in the 1600s?
