The Mixtape is the second novel I've read by Brittainy C. Cherry, & this story was just as cute as The Holly Dates.
After reading some relatively darker stuff recently, Emery & Oliver's story was truly a breath of fresh air. The character development was pretty good, & the writing allowed the story to flow with ease, outside of the intimacy scenes towards the end that seem a little forced & out of place.
Cherry uses the word "SNICKERED" way too much. It can't be just me.
It didn't ruin the novel for me, but it is definitely a little jarring & pulls me out of the story sometimes.
I loved the music/mixtape element throughout the book. Some of my favorite musicians were featured, & that alone made me love the story even more.
In this novel, Cherry depicts the struggles with mental health many face today (depression, suicidal ideation, postpartum, family dynamics) while also weaving in musics ability to help us cope & connect with others around us. Listening to, sharing, & losing oneself in music can lead to such therapeutic healing.
Finding your family... the people out there that love you for you, are there for you even at your lowest, & care for you despite any perceived flaws... is necessary for survival in this world. More than survival, true growth & evolution of self. It's the difference between fitting in & actually being accepted.
I feel like that is one of the main messages the author wanted to express in this story.
While there were definitely elements that I didn't care for, this novel was fun & leaves you feeling hopeful. Overall, it was a good book.
"The worst feeling in the world was coming to the realization that your idols were merely human themselves."
"I wondered how many times a day humans lied to one another about being okay."
"...true love is unconditional. It doesn’t set guidelines for how you have to act in order to be loved."
"...you helped bring my son back to life after he was holding death’s hand."
"My parents’ love is loud when my own love for myself is quiet. That’s how you love Reese. You are her loudest love.”
"It’s a sad day when a person needs to use God to cover up their guilt for harsh choices in life"
"You should never have to beg for anyone to love you. You should never have to do as they say for them to deem you worthy of their love. That’s not how love works."
"I want to be here."

I hesitate to write this because I almost feel like this book is just too amazing for words…
I discovered this book through pure luck - it was recommended to me on my Kindle app for Black History Month. The author and the main characters are black. Usually I don’t read things just because it’s a certain month or holiday, but something drew me to this, and I’m SO glad.
This was definitely so much more than just a romance - it shows a *realistic* journey of healing for two very different situations, including the fact that nothing is ever perfect.
It’s rare to read a book and really feel a connection with EACH character, and that’s how I felt reading The Mixtape.
So, thank you Brittainy Cherry ✌

This book is now hands down my number one favourite of the year so far.
I sobbed pretty much the whole way through this and connected so deeply to Emery and Oliver. I just wanted the best for them and watch their healing journey together, facing past traumas and grief.
The depiction of depression was so well done in my opinion. I felt so seen and so many of these quotes resonated with me.
Reece who was the child in this book was also the most adorable thing ever. She just brought so many joyful moments and I loved all of her interactions.
Emery's parents were the most insufferable characters. The absolute rage they made me feel and how they treated her was just absolutely despicable. Emery was so strong and a character to look up to and she deserved so much better from her parents that it made me visibly angry.
The romance was also just so soft and there were so many feelings and pining between them. I absolutely ate it up.
Another point I adored about this book was the connection to music and having songs that can so expertly express the feelings that so many people face and that through these words it can help us to feel less alone. As someone who cannot live without music, this again was just so relatable and beautiful to me.
As you can tell from my extremely long review, I adored this book with my entire heart and soul and I know that I will be thinking about these characters and this story for an incredibly long time to come.
5/5 stars!

I listened to the audiobook version and loved the dual narration. This was a fantastic love story expertly intertwined with themes of personal growth, overcoming loss, and breaking generational curses.
Wonderful story!!
My husband is a musician so I was drawn to the storyline initially. I really, really enjoyed this story, the way it played out, how secrets were slowly revealed and how it resolved! I wonder if the author has considered writing subsequent stories focusing on some of the other characters and how their lives evolved concurrent to and following this story? I would enjoy reading how Sammie and Kelly are doing.

" you are in charge of your life's mixtape, your mixtape, you choose the songs, the memories and above all the people"
