I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced by Delphine Minoui, Nojoud Ali

This one is also written for kids (older kids). It is the true story of a 10 year old girl who was married off by her desperate father. She is abused by her much older, horrible husband and gets the courage to run away, find a lawyer and file for divorce in a country where such things aren't done. It's inspiring - and the bad stuff is referred to fairly obliquely so a well-read child could handle it.

I think it is an interesting perspective to read about this events from an innocent child's point of view. There are no big revelations or discussions on societal and cultural customs and it is simply a matter of a child wanting to have a better life.

What a story, it is unbelievable that marriages to children still happens in today's world. How brave of Nujood to fight for her rights. Quick read, read it in a few hours.

A powerful story of a very brave girl. I was pleasantly surprised that the judges at the court acted so quickly, to be honest. I had half expected Nujood to meet more resistance from the legal system.

This might be my favorite book of the year so far. I am very ignorant of Yemeni--and much of the Eastern world's specific issues. I'm aware that child marriage is a common practice, but because I'm not exposed to the tradition where I live, the concept seems almost unreal to me. However, Nujood's story has enlightened me, and humanized the concept that this is a real occurrence amongst the world. I'm very glad to have read it.

Wow, what courage. Good for her, taking her fate into her own hands and changing her life in a culture where that is not so easy, especially for women.

A fast-paced re-telling of 10 year old Nujood's heartbreaking story. She moves with her family to the big city and is married to a man 20 years her senior. After a few horrifying months in the rural north of Yemen, she returns to the city for a visit and escapes to the courthouse where she petitions for, and wins, a divorce making her the youngest divorcee in the country's history.

Very wonderful story about how a little girl forced into a marriage at the age of 9 finds courage to get herself out of her oppression. Nujood also talks about her family and this book gives you a good sense of what life is like for the people who live in her country. I love her open honesty!
