I found the writing style took some adjustment and, scoffed a little at the start. Glad I kept on as this book was really bloody good and well written. Very unique, can be quite dark, sad, adventurous and kept me on my toes. I smashed this book out in 3-4 days which is very impressive as I usually don’t have much time to read. I definitely recommend this as a great novel to read. Already bought the second and third novels and can’t wait to read them!

Moving on, there’s a very unique magic (not really the word but, is) system.

I’m quite a writing snob (poor writing just puts me off immediately) and this book has quality. Pick it up if you haven’t already!

Me ha encantado la estructura, la historia cada vez me ha ido atrapando más (aunque engancha desde el principio) y los temas que trata son interesantes. Además, releer el prólogo al final, teniendo el contexto, es bastante satisfactorio.

I absolutely loved this book! It's very dark (fair warning) but it's done so well. Nothing feels gratuitous, it paints a dark but brutally honest picture.

I loved the different lived experiences depicted amongst the diverse characters (including a poly relationship!) and he world-building without clear explanation was a fun mystery to unravel as I went along.

Highly recommend, Jemisin has an incredible gift and so much talent! I've already requested the next one in the series from my local library.

This book deserves all of its accolades and hype. N. K. Jemisin has created an amazing story full of outstanding worldbuilding, unique and incredible pov characters, and a plot that had me guessing and glued throughout the entire book. This is probably one of the best books I have read so far this year and it is definitely one of the rare 6🌟 reads.

perhaps it was my brain but i got kinda confused with the narrator thingy. i do think it was super interesting to have multiple "narrators", one of them being 2nd person, but towards the end i got a bit lost with the characters (if you know, you know). still, i hope i like the rest of the trilogy a bit better because the plot is certainly super interesting and relevant!! and i loved the diversity and the queer rep!

Incredible and intense. Jemisin writes in a sprawling (yet tightly connected) way, such that every piece feels so purposeful. I've never read a book quite like it.

Wow. I mean the world building alone makes this book a minimum 4-star - the author puts so much thought and care into a world of turmoil, strife, and oppression. She writes about pain and violence so intimately it almost hurts to read, but turns it into something of grit and determination, painting a world that is so intensely fucked up and imaginative you can’t stop reading and hoping. The use of multiple viewpoints usually annoys me, but it was done in such a way that actually really worked for me. The ending was a bit too abrupt for my taste and left me wanting more (which is a bit disappointing because i have heard the rest of the series is not as good) but overall an amazing story. Definitely should come with major trigger warnings
