Lovely cultural story that explored belonging, change, and love.

The magic realism bit about angry ancestors that suffered and had complex relationships was also heart wrenching. I loved every drop of this story. Honour the ancestors and appease the gods.... Or else you forget where you came from and lose your mother tongue... And maybe your life

A fun story about family, being yourself, ghosts, and honouring tradition.

Coming Home is Hard but it's where you draw your strength. Zen Cho's novel talks about Jessmyn, a Malaysian Chinese American moving to Malaysia with her family and discovering her maternal family's secretive past. Their past includes the supernatural and touches on the present.

It's a solid read but I'm wondering how people who have had less contact with this part of the world will follow the narrative. The relationship between Christianity and local beliefs is complex and at times gets confused in this story.
