This book is very good 10/10

I wanted to like this more than I did. I appreciate what it tried to do, but I guess I expected something different.

A very good ghost story. The main character felt a bit frustrating at times, but that just made her more human and realistic. She does rise to the occasion. I liked the social commentary and the sometimes problematic family relationships. A self-serving revenge can have long-lasting effects.

It's so refreshing to read a book where the protagonist has a realistic relationship with her parents. They're neither saints nor saboteurs. She loves them to pieces, and also finds them by turns exasperating, frustrating, embarrassing, nurturing, inspiring, irritating, and puzzling.

It's a fantastic book, and it was very fun to read.

I read this a while back and thought I left a review! But apparently not? Oh well, it's really good. Mysterious at times. I really liked Jess as a character. A lot of the plot gets resolved, but it also ends on a somewhat open note. I kind of hope there will be a sequel!

Truly solid book covering the theme of female rage. Set in Malaysia, the author uses Malay religious doctrine and superstition to bring the main character into her family and into her own as a strong queer Asian woman. I listened to the book so the Malay phrases were lost on me at times
