I've read two books by Zen Cho and think she's great! If you occasionally max out on European-derived fantasy, her Asian goddesses, ghosts, and demons are a wonderful change. Highly recommended. And yet in spite of the very god fantasy, these books are very grounded in present-day life.

Goddamn, this was a good fucking book.
Stuff I liked in no particular order:
- A book written by an Asian author that isn't about Asian SUFFERING
- A main character who happens to be a lesbian, but that isn't her entire story. It factors into her relationship with her parents, but a LOT OF OTHER THINGS also influence that relationship
- It's set in Malaysia, and you can FEEL that on every page. The Malaysian-English dialogue, the heat, the food, EVERYTHING. Including the racism and the treatment of migrant workers. EVERYTHING.
- The story has a lot of TWISTS AND TURNS and really doesn't let up until the end. I couldn't put this book down.
Stuff I didn't like:
- The main character's girlfriend was such a non-character that I really didn't care whether or not their relationship worked out
- The segment where they go the Monkey God temple didn't do much for the overall plot.
BUT OVERALL THIS WAS A REALLY GREAT BOOK. Definitely going to read more by Zen Cho.
