*I received an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thanks for the free book*

I wasn't a huge fan of Cho's "Sorcerer to the Crown" but this urban fantasy set in Malaysia was great fun and I really enjoyed it! Jessamyn Teo is a lesbian, she is broke, has just completed her studies and wanted to move in with her girlfriend, but now her parents have taken her back to Malaysia where she is consequently haunted by the ghost of her grandmother, attacked by spirits, nearly murdered and hunted down by gang bosses while her girlfriend is growing unhappier by the minute. This was wonderfully weird and interesting, I also learned so much. Books like these really show how much better fantasy can get if we leave Europe out of it. You go, Zen Cho!

A wonderful read! Jess has moved from the US to Malaysia after her father got cancer and lost his job, a recent Harvard graduate, and secretly gay, Jess has a lot on her plate. She becomes embroiled in a god’s need for vengeance against a gangster/real estate developer. The world is vividly described, the characters both human, divine, and ghostly feel earl and engaging.

The story is funny and exciting.

I thoroughly liked this story and enjoyed figuring out all the little pieces as the story came together.  There were some parts that felt a little slow at times, but it was very easy to get pulled back in. The last quarter of the book especially was so so good and the author really connected me to Black Water Sister and her fight for something so many of us fight for, too.  I’m really enjoying this author and her unique voice set in a culture I was wholly unfamiliar with, but deeply enjoyed. Definitely recommend this story!

Don't judge this one by it's cover like I did! A great story, a bit intense at times, but a really fast-paced and good read overall.

No estuvo mal pero es verdad que se me hizo bastante lenta en muchas partes y me contaba seguir leyendo.
No es mala historia, sin embargo siento que es algo aburrida.
