At first I was expecting something light and whimsical like "The Monsters of Templeton", but this is a very different book. No monsters or pyrokinesis, just a very real and moving story about growing up in an idealistic community that often falls short of its ideals, the meaning of community, and our connections to friends and family that can either sustain or damage. The language is lush and gorgeous calling to mind Annie Dillard. The author's mastery of imagery and mood can by turns grab you by the scruff of the neck or poetically seduce you into chasing along and losing yourself in the pages. I hated for the novel to end. I still love Monsters, but I'm thrilled by Groff's growing power and maturity as shown in Arcadia.
