The main protagonist is Chloe, who is a twenty nine year old woman, trying her best to keep her job as a newspaper archivist whilst also looking after her elderly Nan who unfortunately has dementia and her memory is continuing to decline.
My first thoughts were that Chloe seemed on the edge, as though she could snap at any moment due to the pressures she was feeling both from her occupation and the demands she was facing when returning home at the end of the day.
Things go from bad to worse when unfortunate events lead to her Nan being put in a home, resulting in the need for the family home to be sold to pay the upcoming fees.
You could understand why Chloe's emotions were all over the place.
Whilst this is going on, at work Chloe becomes rather fixated on an old police case of Angela Kyle, a four year old, missing since 1980. What starts as simply collating evidence turns into something much more obsessive.
It's as though Chloe craves some sort of normality, like she missed out on a truly loving family when she was younger. Could this be what leads her to track down Angela's parents, Maureen and Patrick?
Now the book is called The Imposter, so in theory someone has to be the imposter don't they. The question is who?
There were many layers to The Imposter. Little side arcs running alongside the main story.
I will say, I didn't instantly connect with the characters but I feel like this was the authors intention because it made me think that each one was guilty, maybe not for the disappearance of Angela but perhaps accountable for events that came previously or followed on from that.
Manipulation, secrets and lies come together to make a spine-chilling and suspenseful novel.
And the ending, well it's worth reading just to reach that conclusion! I feel as though I need to re-read the book to look out for clues that I must have missed.

The Imposter is a novel that has an original plot. It's quite slow to start with, but really get to know the protagonist, Chloe, because of how in-depth we know her we really feel it when the story begins to pick up the pace and hits its crescendo with the ending.
Ooooooh!!
Truthfully, at first it was quite slow and at one point I wasn’t quite sure where it was going but then it really picked up!
Chloe is determined to help the Kyle’s after reading the archives of their story about their missing daughter. She is drawn to them and believes she can help them get the answers they never got from authorities.
The imposter was eerie, full of suspense and wonder and distrust throughout! I knew something wasn’t quite right throughout but I just couldn’t put my finger on what it was. There was twists, turns and revelations! It was a fabulous read!
Thank you NetGalley and pan Macmillan for allowing me the opportunity to read this :)! Highly recommend!

29 year old Chloe lives a solitary life caring for her ailing grandmother who suffers from Alzheimer's. She works as an archivist for the local newspaper and her current role is archiving all articles for a new computer system the new system which includes files and articles that are many years old
Chloe starts to take a particular interest in the disappearance of 4 year old Angela rose Kyle (Angie) in 1980 from a local park when she starts archiving articles relating to that case. What starts as a general interest quickly turns into an unhealthy obsession and Chloe is convinced she can solve the mystery of what happened to Angie which includes getting close to Angie’s parents and becoming a lodger in their home.
I really liked this story and the concept of it especially Chloe being an archivist because she had all the information at her fingertips as to Angie’s case and that inevitably fuelled her obsession. As a character Chloe is odd to say the least but very quickly you realise that she is lost and she feels like she doesn’t belong especially the moments shared with her grandmother who doesn’t always remember her.
This was a slow read to begin with but soon picked up as the story progressed. The slowness did add atmosphere to the story and added more context to Chloe’s life, where she was in life and what had got her to this point. There were little snippets of where I thought the story would go but the ending was not what I was expecting and completely took me by surprise. I wanted the story to continue to see what would happen to Chloe next.
This was an atmospheric thriller full of suspense and secrets.
I received a gifted copy for an honest review.

Wow! That was a really good thriller and I have really enjoyed reading it. I liked the fact that a lot of the plot is quite realistic - no insane turn of events, no unplausible pllt twist... It was all neat and somehow reasonably realistic, while also... unexpected? The main character, Chloe, is the one who really makes this a great thriller - she had depth, personality, flaws, complexity.... The last chapter - no spoiler - made me wish there was another book about this character because this character's truth was just brilliant.
