This book is an excellent culmination of examples of everything I despise about romance novels. The predictable love triangle, the fake drama over literally nothing, the endless stewing over internal feelings that no one seems to have maturity to express with any rationality. It's stupid. Jondalar is drama queen extrodinaire to the point of apparently becoming temporarily deaf when he's up in his feelings. I was enjoying this series up until this point.
I can't understand how Auel wrote this garbage and thought "Yes. This is good and makes perfect sense."

This series is my favorite book series.
But this book is my least favorite in the series by far.
So much back and forth and not enough meaningful conversation between the main characters. It’s frustrating to watch

I had a lot of trouble getting to the finish line. The whole plot revolved around miscommunication and a love triangle (which is a trope that I absolutely hate - so it really didn’t help my negative view) that could have made sense if The Valley of Horses hadn’t happened. The angst was frustratingly kept up throughout the whole book it made the ending look rushed in comparison: in the last chapter, Jondalar and Ayla suddenly remembered that they should actually talk to each other.
I did really like the plot with the Mamutoi and the plot building for the other books. I’m really eager to find out what kind of “destiny”awaits Ayla.
