Trigger warnings for Ariadne include:
alcohol, animal death; assault, attempted murder; bestiality, blood and
bones; child death, childbirth, cults, death, gore, miscarriage (past); pregnancy, ršŸ…°ļøpe, sexism, starvation,
su1cide and war.

This book was slow, but very detailed and I quite enjoyed reading it, even if it took me the best part of 2 weeks to finish.
~
It followed the story of Ariadne (probably not a huge surprise there). It follows her from childhood, detailing the events of her young life on Crete as a princess, to her and Phaedra meeting Theseus, and then Dionysus.
~
As with any story you'd find in Greek mythology, it is riddled with deaths, rape, sexism and misogyny and a whole lot of war and general violence, as that was the way of many of the society's in history.
~
While I can enjoy the stories, I also take it with a pinch of salt because it's a work of fiction, and there are a lot of actions and events that were wrong and unacceptable with the standards of today's society.

I'm sad to say that I didn't enjoy this book.  I love Greek mythology, so I was really looking forward to reading this, but unfortunately, I think this book is really boring.  There are some things that are interesting, but they don't save the overall story from being pretty dull.  There are also quite a few places in the book where the language and the way it's written is so flowery to the point where it feels forced and pretentious.  I really wanted to love this book, which makes it worse because I'm just left feeling disappointed.

Ariadne was super cool to read, mostly I wanted to read it because of the waterstones displays and the cover is super pretty. Also mythology books are fun. This was less fun and more, a good feminist retelling of a story that I aparently only know the first...quarter of? It is like a way to say, hey, there are great women behind 'great' men.

It was pretty slow at times but I did really enjoy it. Lots of self-reflection and story-telling but thats what you get with greek mythology.
dont expect it to not end like the mythology!
you will cry.

If you want to read something similar to Circe, keep looking. This book doesnā€™t compare: the prose is indifferent and the characters are annoying and flat. Around a quarter through I realized I didnā€™t care enough to keep reading.
