"Vivrò con me e di me, come ho vissuto fin ora".
"Io, insomma, dovevo vivere, vivere, vivere".
Luigi Pirandello is not only known by his works in prose but for his work as a playwright and this second trait is visible in this work and in other similar works (like 6 characters in search for a writer) . As his stories are often times filled with originality and are extremely dramatic. But also depict a weird reality that calls our attention.
In this narrative the protagonist, Mattia Pascal, finds himself in a life that gives him no pleasure. With a wife and a mother in law badgering him constantly. The only people he loved were his twin daughters and mother which destiny decided to rob from him. In a desperate act to escape he goes to monte Carlo where luck meets him and he acquires a small fortune. It is when he decides to go back home, only to find out while reading the newspaper that his wife and mother in law declared an unknown corpse to be his own.
Emmersed in a profound shock he realizes that it was his opportunity to start a fresh new life and settled in Rome with a new identity. His character develops in unexpected and admirable, ways. Yet now the protagonist saw himself entangled in multiple incidents, that lead him to conclude that continuing with his plans will entail only misery for those he loves, precisely because his entire life (his gained freedom and his past) is now a lie.
Ultimately, he decided to fake his own death and return to his original life. That proved to be difficult as his family and town seemed to be adjusted to his death, and his own adjustments to his previous character prompted him to have mercy on his now remarried wife.
So, after dying twice, the late mattia pascal reduces himself to a figure outside the mainstream of society a walk on par in his own life.
The book proved to be an interesting take upon how death affected him. And how he didn't have to physically die, to understand what it was like to literally be outcasted from society.

Bello e strano.

oh yeah, forgot to log this one too.
If there's anything that i dislike about this, it's that the plot is a little too predictable & the main character is just a tad bit too unlikable to really empathize with for me. otherwise, it's great - we talked about this one book for a whole semester and never ran out of ideas, so there's a lot to unpack.
me personally. i'm a huge fan of circular narratives where the protagonist ends up a his starting point again but can't quite reconnect with his old life after everything he's gone through. this book does that really well. and the premise is quite intriguing - what if you could start your life again as an entirely new person? it reminded me a lot of Max Frisch's Stiller in the central themes - even through I definitely prefer Stiller in comparison, but this is still solid.
