Reminiscent of Firefly and Mass Effect, only with LOTS more explosions.  Seriously, the last hundred pages was one giant battle.  But the characters are very likeable, and the ending was good -- we'll see where this goes!

This book was really just okay. I don't have strong feelings about it one way or the other. The main character was a little annoying, or maybe it was just that we're so different from each other that I couldn't relate much. The plot was fine, though I thought the beginning part took too long and was a bit slow. The rest of the characters were pretty good, and the descriptive writing was wonderful. The book just failed to grab me.

Really enjoyed this book, I cannot believe it is not more talked about! There was a lot of action, but also followed by good world building and interesting characters. I gave this 3.5 stars.

I enjoyed this -- it was long, but didn't really drag and, in fact, I think the writing got smoother and more natural as the book progressed. Early on, it was full of aggressive italics for emphasis in quotes, but by the end those had mostly vanished. The relationships that developed were convincing, particularly the one between the main character and the girl that is the object of the quest that opens the book, and the effort put into peopling the universe with a wide variety of carefully drawn species was admirable.
