Takeaway(s) from a man.

Fear of losing independence may actually be fear of getting close.
Be as honest as possible.
Don't take too much for granted.
Try harder not to hang on too tight.

I bought this after looking up “books to empower women”.

I wasn’t expecting it to be so catering towards men!

I did find the parts about not being a doormat and not giving in to men really insightful.

But then the switch flipped really quickly and turned into letting them get away with whatever they want and essentially being subservient to them.

I’m giving it two stars because some of the advice was really good but it really wasn’t an empowering book!

Meh. This was another one that I chalk up to reading because of therapy (not because it was suggested, but it was mentioned and I’m a curious person). I have mixed feelings about it: it made for some interesting conversations with friends and it does have some good points, but overall I think it is a little too simplistic and makes men sound like dumb creatures who can’t think for themselves and only want sex (which is the thing that pisses me off most about “the patriarchy”). That said, I now understand what it means to “play games” in dating, because this was essentially the playbook—manipulation 101.

Ultimately, I liked the sections about having self respect and not being a doormat in a relationship or in life generally, but I had to just skim the rest by about 30% in because it was sort of annoying me how silly and antiquated the examples of “good relationships” were and how much the author contradicted herself. Like, “play dumb so he thinks he’s in charge”, but also, “be independent and never let him think you’re emotional”…the math ain’t mathing here.

TLDR: I think I need a break from self help/dating books for a minute.

I did not like this book and definitely wasn’t for me. It was very American and I tend to dislike this kind of ‘self-helpbooks’. I would never advise a lot of the weird advises given by this author because I just don’t believe it will work. I don’t feel like testing it either. Just act the way you truly are, trust yourself and know your worth ❤️
