I feel like this series is losing its way a little bit. I really enjoyed this book, but it’s starting to become much bigger than itself and the amount of characters, and dungeon layout, and lore, and bits and pieces you have to keep track of is starting to require a notebook. I understand it needs to become something bigger than just the dungeon, but what is told in five books could have probably been three. And there’s another three to go. Here we go…

Goddam it Matt Dinniman! 4.75/5. Very, very mild potential spoilers but I try to avoid them.

The consistent and brilliant thing about the DCC series is how well written the characters are and how well thought the plot and how it all connects, continues to be.

Personal thoughts and highlights:

To get it out the way, the only reason it’s not a solid 5 - I felt the climax with certain bosses were a bit brief. However see below about subverted expectations…

I mentioned in my book 4 review, Carl’s morality is leaning into grey territory. This continues to be seen but with the added knowledge of why. I still am unsure how I feel about it but that’s why it’s so captivating.

Katia’s arc went from interesting to f**king WHAT! The stakes continue to rise perfectly without feeling overstuffed.

The cliffhanger at the epilogue really took me by surprise. However, with each books’s cliff hanger they perfectly keep me wanting more.

The politics and lore of the universe, as expected is fleshed out more and starting to open the wider plot threads up. Zev is the goat. The thought that goes into all this is mad.

Carl’s insane, god tier plot armour felt pulled back this time around. The stakes felt more intense and plans only worked due to his friends or unexpected allies coming through. Refreshing!

I need more Samantha, or I’ll kill your mothers!

Sledge is lowkey a hero.

Certain plot threads I thought would be held back for later books are brought to the forefront and whether they stay that way, I enjoyed the subversion. I really can’t tell where the plot will take me and I constantly want to keep reading.

The biggest twist? Well let’s say floor 6 ended well, floor 7 was unexpected.

I’m slowly catching up to current book releases and I’m both ecstatic and worried that I’ll have to wait another year to keep reading this amazing series.

stakes are getting even higher. i had so many moments of nervousness and fear and a sense of overwhelmingness. i love carl and donut but i got extremely worried many times. concerns are very high. questionable decisions are being made. i dont even know what to think or feel. i read these so fast and then at the end it starts to sink in and it’s so much
