4.5 stelle.

Bellissimo secondo libro!

Very good second book! Full of plot twists from the beginning.

Alina and Mal at the end of the first book escaped successfully, the first avoiding a life of subjugation at the hands of the Darkling and the second the dead penalty for desertion. They hide at Cofton, a town at the other side of the True Sea. But will an entire sea keep them safe from the powerful and dangerous Darkling? Will it impede Alina to come back to Os Alta to save Ravka's civilians? I find the answer a bit obvious.

But now let's talk about the one and only new character of which I've already a huge crush on: Nikolai!
Differently from his brother Vasily (whom is arrogant, shallow and, forgive me the term, a cretin), Nikolai is the one you can call a real and true King. Unfortunately he had the unluck to be second-born, and to be labelled a "bastard" from many gossiping civilians.
Since Nikolai grew up at court, he knows how to present himself, how to appear at the best and how to say the right thing at the right time. Will Alina learn from him? Let's remember the protagonist is described as an open book by both the Darkling and Genya.

The plot goes on smoothly, without many boring moments (maybe just the life at the palace bored me a bit, but it was a crucial part of the plot, so I gritted my teeth and got through it). The finale didn't disappoint me at all, because Alina grew a lot (as a character), she faced many difficulties and (as the good protagonist that she is) made also many stupid choices. But we forgive her. I still love her.
The finale demonstrates that Alina is determined to put an end to the Darkling's reign of terror, at any cost except for the lives of innocents and friends. She doesn't want another Novokribirsk on her coscience.

The last chapters were great. Loved the stakes and the action, but the bit at the little palace went on a little too long for me without anything significant happening. So glad Alina is finally embracing her full power and not throwing it away for anyone or toning it down for the sake of pleasing other people. The world building is scrumptious, while I’m totally lost with all the ranks and their powers I truly love the vibes this series gives and the Grisha system is so cool.
Mal infuriated me to unseen levels. Don’t even get me started on when he kissed Zoya, you would’ve seen me on the news. Alina was not nearly mad enough and icl I was rooting for her to kiss Nikolai so much after that. They can’t all handle a baddie fmc with power, Mal clearly cannot. Nikolai though

I had high hopes after devouring Shadow and Bone. I think this book just really really drags in the middle. Felt like the story could have been more successful if edited down significantly in the center.

Also, kinda missing Alina coming into her power fully, she seems less sure and has less conviction than the first book, which also makes the book feel a little draggy. It's like, you're the Sun Summoner, come into your power or don't, the middling feels a bit boring.

I loved the cast of characters in this book. Would read whole other side stories just of the twins or the prince.

Very excited to read the last book in the trilogy, just in like, not love with this one.
