Seriously one of the best books I have ever read. It blows me away that we let our own citizens be treated this way. Frightening.

This memoir of the Japanese internment is much more emotionally complex than I remembered. I first read it as an adolescent many years ago and mostly remembered its descriptions of life at Manzanar. But it is as much about family and growing up and shame and assimilation.

I wasn’t particularly interested in it until the last few chapters that made me shed tears. I feel it’s a good start to anyone wanting to read their first memoir.
