Spanning across 800 years, it is first and foremost, a tale of friendship, devotion and love.
Xie Lian is a disgraced god. His lot in life is misfortune - from being unable to save his country from war and plague, to losing everything he ever owned - he's cursed as the bringer of bad luck. His friends gave up on him, his devotees deserted him, his temples burnt down and desecrated.
But he is also a god with good intentions - he wanted to save the common folk. And this has earned him a friend in the most unlikely person of the immortal realm - the Ghost King, Crimson Rain Seeking Flower.
However his friendship goes beyond the common definition, for as threads slowly start unravelling on the story behind Xie Lian's misfortune filled life, and secrets are unearthed - there is a terrible truth to be uncovered.
In short, I fell in LOVE with this story, its well written main characters, the side characters with their own beautiful story arcs and the slowly developing relationship between former Crown Prince Xie Lian and the Ghost King Hua Cheng.
When people gush about how this couple literally "invented" love, they're right!! The amount of pure devotion and care shown between these characters is heart wrenching and worth reading every page for - then rereading once more when clues fall into place and you realise that the one insignificant detail from chapter 5 is a BIG plot point.
It's a fully translated novel (into English) that can be accessed online, so GO READ IT.

This is one of my all time favourite series. Like many who have read TGFC I stated with the online English translation that included all five books. It was long, at times felt never ending but by the time I finished I didn’t want it to end. It’s a great read, with an amazing story with a cast of characters to love and hate. I found both the official and online translations to be very informative with footnotes and in the paperbacks each book had a helpful glossary and character guides. This was my first Chinese to English book I had ever read so some concepts that are very standard in Danmie or just Chinese literature in general took a little while to get used to, but once I understood everything was much easier to digest.
I truly think this novel has one of the best main characters I’ve ever read. His plot line, backstory, trials, wins and failures will always stick with me and many others. It has a very happy ending (complete with domestic gay activities and the extras) so any pain in reading I found was worth it. I’ve read the full series twice now and will definitely read it again in the future.
