A university read that I honestly didn’t really understand until I read a summary of what the book was about. Despite this, the way it was written is intense and is an incredible book, it’s just not one that I will be inclined to read again.

Maybe I'll get back to this one day, but it's barely readable and the subject is just depressing. I can handle depressing and dark if it's engaging...
Word of the day is desolate
There are so many quotable lines in this it’s SO beautifully written
Weird to read something from the perspective of a morally grey actively racist “hero”, especially because Conrad isn’t particularly the champion of the Congolese and this isn’t exactly an exposé/whistleblower book a la The Jungle…
Having just watched Blue Velvet and already having that sense of unease from characters not really changing in the midst of The Horrors I’m gonna hope I don’t dream tonight
Finally, I think my fave quote: “No eloquence could have been so withering to one’s belief in mankind as his final burst of sincerity.” Like I hope that’s not generally true but it encapsulates this whole nightmare quite well
And yet Marlow’s fascination with Kurtz/power/violence still leads him to honour him in some strange way??? MEN

just because you can write well, doesn’t mean you can get away with racism!
blah blah blah sure there’s interesting symbolism to discuss and lots to analyze, but i simply did not enjoy this
