Classic? Yes. Engaging, enthralling and welcoming to readers? No. But Conrad does master the slogging, claustrophobic and painful feel of a journey through a darkly exotic locale and dark practices. This is a book I wish I'd read during a lit class, as it would have benefited from some historical context and conversational explication. As a book to read on your own it isn't necessarily "enjoyable," but as it was the first of its kind, I can see why it is the important classic it is today.
