what did i just read

"I hope it wasn’t too traumatic." Tasha Suri says in the acknowledgments... Well, I have never been more traumatized in my life.

This book contained the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. It made me the happiest person on earth and the saddest at the same time.

If you thought The Jasmine Throne waw great, oh you're in for a treat. Tasha Suri steps it up about 100 notches in this one. The Oleander Sword truly had me on the edge of my seat the entire book.

In book one, I had many questions about the world and why it was the way it was, but I read this, and it just clicked. There was literally a light bulb moment halfway where it all made sense. A genius wrote this book, I am telling you.

Priya and Malini. It hurts. There was a terrible sense of foreboding throughout the novel. They really are THAT morally grey power couple.

OH bhumika! rao! their point of views I love. Especially Rao, him finding himself and his path this book was great. Someone give that boy a break. Bhumika's pov was genius. Her relationship with Jeevan was a work of art.

How many times can I say that I love this book without getting annoying? I don't think I can wait long enough for book three.

WHAT THE FUCUKKKK /POS

the second half of the book is such fucking sexy dnd warlock shit. someone should make a homebrew of that.

WE GOT SMUT=!=!=?^?^?^=!! it was so good i was so happy about it. like sorry bur "try and break me"?! maammmm "let me show you how to break me" even hotter. "just teeth and lips and tongue, punishingly fierce, all devotion" "loving and lovingöy cruel by turns" HHHHHH when she submits to her and says "i know you, i know what you want, i prmoise you, its freely given" WTF

the first 10% f the book i was just trying to remember what happened in the first book but then it got good. i feellike everything was explained so well that even i understood the war tactics, the political intrige intricacies, the jabs. the whole deepa shit? so good. also the pacing was so good and ITS SO WELL WRITTEN!! the themes of water and fire, light and dark, so good.... JUST!! THE WATER!! THE FIRE!!! u guys, u GUYS

"what is the star, but distant fire, reaching for you across the worlds?"

also the whole fucking rao arc killed me, I CARE FOR THIS LIL GUY AND THEN TASHA GOES AND SAYS
"perpahs all his loved ones would be nothing but effigies for rao to gaze upon, and remember what he had lost" AND THEN HES LIKE I CANT CARE ANYMORE honey bbhbbb r4ewq

last but not least
when malini was going to lie to priya as a lil betrayal and in turn priya stabs her. HOW FUCKING JUICY WAS THAT. and how funny was it when mailini was like "she was asking priya to die for her based on lies but she needed to win this war more than anything so be it" but then priya stabs her and shes like how daRE YOU BETRAY ME WTF as if you werent betraying her already. i mean its two very different things but cmon double edged sword double edges both ways
oh yes i do feel very conflicted about malini.

this was such a fantastic sequel, one minor issue i had with book 1 was that i did not care for some of the narrators (Ashok, Vikram…) and their part of the story, but in this book that was not the case at all.

i found the stories even better than the previous book and i adore how much more focus there was on both the magical side of this world and on Malini and Bhumika’s political schemes.
loved it, can’t wait for the last book!!

This book was just as incredible as the first one without a drop of middle book syndrome in sight. Everything felt so complex and realistic in a way that had me completely sucked in. All of the characters were so intricate and flawed in such an interesting variety of ways and this was reflected in the complex relationships between them. The way the world building and especially the religions were expanded on were so interesting - I loved reading about the various beliefs and the sub-sects of them as well as how they interlinked. I once again loved that we got to see from such a wide variety of perspectives and thought it was done masterfully. I can’t believe I’m going to have to wait so long for the third book.

I generally have trouble keeping track of names, and the dizzying array of point-of-view characters made it too difficult to continue, especially in combination with the slow pacing. It makes it feel like too many people are talking and nothing is happening. Even the very brief battle wasn't enough to help. I tried to read it for two months but it started feeling like a chore so I stopped.

*slaps the cover*
This bad girl can fit so much fucking trauma in it.

Honestly, for some reason I did not expect things to get THIS fucked up in book 2, and it’s my bad, because I need book 3 RIGHT NOW IMMEDIATELY. (But I am now also scared because… what if it doesn’t fix everything? I am but a soft creature, I need things to be okay for these disasters.)

This series is to me what Game of Thrones is to straight white men.

Kudos to my darling spouse for putting up with my yelling at an audiobook while furiously carving linocuts.
