I listened to this audio book more so out of curiosity than a genuine interest and/or love for Michelle Obama, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

Funnily enough, the thing that draws people, myself included, to this book quickly became the parts I was least interested in. I didn't care about her opinions on the 2016 election or the state of the Middle East because those we're all things I could assume. Becoming stands out the most when it's the story of Michelle, not Michelle Robinson the daughter and not Michelle Obama the First Lady.

Becoming is it's strongest when Michelle is her most relatable. When she realizes the job she's worked so hard to get doesn't make her happy, when she struggles with becoming a mother and balancing that with work, when she realizes and accepts that she will have to give up the career she worked so hard to get because her husband's career is deemed more important.

The book is worth reading for the parts of her you don't know. Everything surrounding her role in politics is just extra. Which, frankly could have been trimmed down because this book is at least a hundred pages too long.

I didn’t know much about the Obamas’ personal lives before reading Michelle’s memoir. I loved how the book brought her to life for me and detailed her personality, values, and thoughts—all of which I found very admirable and relatable.

The reason I gave the book 3 stars instead of the popular 4 or 5 rating most are giving the memoir was because for the books I enjoy it reads like a 3—some interesting, heartwarming parts, but interspersed with dry, boring sections throughout (i.e. lawyer talk and explanations).

This book has been on my TBR list for awhile and I was so happy to read it for Bookopoly. I listened to it on Audible and it was pretty insightful. The lessons found here are important: how to use you experiences to define your impact. No matter where you are from, you can be the kind of person that works with integrity, humility, and consideration for others.

I had a new appreciation for the Obamas after this and respect many more things in regards to them now. Definitely recommend for some good feels!

I’ve always loved Michelle Obama and I love her even more after reading her book. Beautifully written and I loved hearing her perspective and how she became who she was.

Utterly perfect and immaculate in every way, this memoir was a thought-provoking and memorable read. I think any reader who’s willing to put aside preconceived notions they might have due to partisan loyalties will find something in Michelle Obama’s life story that they have struggled with themselves. Her examples are poignant and applicable, and though she surely left out parts of her life and embellished others (it is, of course, an autobiography circulating in the public sphere - which isn’t to demean or detract from the book, it’s merely to point out that it’s always important to remember who is writing what you’re reading and in what context), I left this book feeling like she herself had reached out and touched a piece of my soul.

I recommend this book to every and anyone: regardless of your political beliefs, your religious or socioeconomic background, what country you’re from, or where you grew up, this story will reach you. Michelle uses easy-to-follow, clear, and yet somehow still striking language to create a work that will truly go down in history. I just hope you follow along.
