3.75 AVERAGE

Brashares has a way of writing that makes empathizing with her characters effortless. This is a timeless story of friendship, and it never disappoints. I've read it many times over the years, and each time I get something new from it. I love when a book grows with me.

That was a really sweet book. It’s a very character-focused and perfect coming of age story. Their stories all had a lot of heart and emotion, and I felt like it captured their actions and feelings as 15 year olds very well. I love how close the four girls are despite their differences.

I’ve seen the movie several times, and while there were several scenes that were different, I think the movie still captured the same heart that the book has. It was a really sweet and fun experience reading the first book, and I’m interested in reading the other books in this series.

I’d never read this series before but had always wanted to so I finally started it. This story was fun and emotional and reminded me of all the feelings and experiences that come along with being a teenage girl. Although it was my first time reading it felt nostalgic in a way that reading summer teenage books often do. It takes you back to being a teenager and makes you think back to what you experienced. There were some age gaps in the book that made me feel a bit icky but that’s my only gripe with it.

The girls were complex and felt real, they learned a lot throughout the book, I’m looking forward to reading on as I’m not quite invested in them and wanting to know where their lives are headed. The ending of this book made me feel quite hopeful about my own life, reminding me there is plenty of joy and experiences to be had.

A nice stopping point for these characters. I like what she did with the pants.

carmen’s dad did not get enough hate. resolutions in general just don’t even happen. it’s just fade to black and suddenly everything is fine next time they appear in the book.
and the casual racism carmen has to deal with never even gets mentioned or called what it is.
then there’s the romanization of statutory rape and blaming bridget for it.
fucking yikes this book is bad

I adore young adult fiction, and these books really capture what it's like to be a teenage girl. I'm not ashamed to admit I cried at least once during each of them.

This book is a nostalgic one. There’s a sense of things not generally said anymore. It’s a true YA in the sense of raw emotions, big feelings, and an understated understanding of the world around them. This is probably my sandiest time reading this… but not likely my last.

3.75 stars! Very cute little book, fluffy, light-hearted for the most part, with underlying emotional plots. I enjoyed the four-way POVs and the quotes from various people, including the characters in the book. Solid read.
