This is, perhaps, one of the saddest love stories... When my English professor introduced this as arguably the "first novel" ever written, the text seemed daunting. But Behn has a very likeable prose style, and the historical contexts of when she was writing really prove that she was a radical thinker, and quite innovative. The plot is highly compelling, and this is a very important and influential piece of literature.
fast-paced
Aphra Behn, spy and playwright in restoration England writes a book exposing the 'dark heart of colonialism' (with thanks to the brilliant ' in our time' BBC radio 4 programme on the author).
The story itself is of the eponymous noble African Prince who because of his love for beautiful imoinda is exiled from his country and deceived into slavery. In Surinam he is sold ,renamed Caesar but his nobility remains. Again dishonourably deceived by the British governor he leads a slave revolt . The ending is inevitably grim and again thanks to the above named programme his bodies fate mirrors that of Charles 1.
A fascinating read for many reasons; a woman striding the literary stage in 17th century, a woman as a spy, perhaps the creator of the novel, and a book that exposes colonialism long before Conrad.
I'd definitely recommend this short book.
