White women writing stories about Black people, especially enslaved people, has never sat right with my spirit. The only reason I read this one was because I had to for my Plantationocene class. Just read a slave narrative from someone who was actually enslaved.

It was written a while ago so there is soo much racism. It reads like a soap opera, and there is no happy ending. It is also incredibly gruesome!
This book made me want to tear my eyes out and weep like a hysterical 1800s gothic female protagonist. A painful read, a painful essay process that took too long and was not satisfying or interesting in the slightest.

As a piece of history, this book is worth preserving. It is accounted by many to be the first novel ever written so it has value as literature, and its perspective on race and slavery are valuable for students of history or anthropology or sociology. However, not many today will want to read it for pleasure, because frankly, it's not fun to read.
