On the one hand, very fun royal AU story! On the other hand, the protagonist drove me up a wall- are we going to get a story where an American finds themselves connected to the BRF where they don't continually say "this is dumb"?

It was a bit hard for me to get into the book because I didn’t enjoy Even in the first 1/3rd of it, but after awhile she grew to be more likable.
I think the plot was decent but seems a bit rushed. I didn’t find the characters to be very loveable and there wasn’t much diversity.

17 year old Evangeline, or Evan, has spent the last seven years of her life getting kicked out of boarding school after boarding school. After her latest trouble, she is finally sent to live with her estranged father, who also happens to be the King of England. Thrust into the international spotlight and a somewhat hostile environment, Evan must face family dramas and damaging secrets.
Despite the undeniably juicy main premise, this book has surprising depth and actually surprised me a few times with the direction of the plot. I also appreciated the refreshing mental health representation and teenage characters that felt authentic.
I’m still experiencing a bit of a book slump and trouble concentrating, but this kept me engaged all the way through.
Recommended for grades 9 and up. Content warning for sexual assault.

Looks like most people thought this would include vampires. Unfortunately it didn’t. Regardless, it was fine. I liked the spirit of Evan and everything was fairly predictable, but my biggest complaint is that the book felt like it couldn’t decide what to be. Romance? Mystery? Royal fanfiction? An unreasonably kind father and message about mental illness? It was all of those things and more. It was enjoyable, and I think I’d add it to my classroom collection, but…(I hate to admit this)…maybe I’m aging out of YA?

3.5 stars from me. An easy book talk (princess diaries but with MURDER) although more serious than the book talk might suggest and a little light on the murder. TW for sexual assault
