A wonderful if depressing story with the unfortunate tendency to sometimes lay it on way too thick (see cleft palette at end, various incredibly heavy-handed metaphors). As someone with very little knowledge of Afghan history I can not vouch or refute authenticity, but the atmosphere, especially within the parts which are set in Afghanistan, is intense. The human interactions are also powerful-- it's hard not to get frustrated at these characters for being human (with the exception of a few background characters who serve more as moralizing cardboard cutouts, see arguable "antagonist"), but it's also hard not to sympathize with them because they're being human. In the end, I still can't wholeheartedly bring myself to like Amir, but I don't think he's uninteresting to follow.
