I liked a lot of the symmetrical plot structure. It also presented Afghani culture in a way that was very approachable to Americans. But man, were there some rough and not so fun scenes here. I don't know if the catharsis was worth the pain. Writing was fine, serviceable, but nothing amazing or groundbreaking.

I have to admit that I did not think I would like this book very much at first. In the beginning, the story developed very slowly, but the farther I got into the book, the more it engaged me. If you can get past the first few chapters, then continue to read it. It's worth it.

There’s a reason that books like Kite Runner become classics. Even though the book will mark a certain historical period set in years of turmoil for the country of Afghanistan, its characters and their reflection of human nature won’t be affected by time. Amir isn’t a hero and as the books narrator he is represented as flawed but not unlikable. He is realistic in that he responds to his surroundings and the other people around him in a very human way. He makes bad life changing decisions and has to learn to live and find redemption for himself. While the book ends on an optimistic note you get the impression that not everything will be sunshine and roses for the characters after the last chapter, as is life.
