interesting but slow, benefits a lot from the warmth of feeling and depth of research but lags a bit in places. i would’ve liked to have a better understanding of many of the interpersonal relationships referenced, as they get a little confusing. some of the political issues, especially regarding racism and imperialism, are kind of sped through and glossed over while others get a lot of detail, and the terms the author uses to describe them should definitely have been updated. i also don’t know how much it really delves into their “love affair,” since a lot of it focused on the more distanced parts of their relationships. learning about their social circle and other connections is interesting and i think relevant, but i would have liked more quotes from their letters to each other and about their relationship. it’s a warm and real-feeling portrait of both women and the people and circumstances that surrounded them, but it does err on the side of quickly mentioning and then speeding by their prejudices and privileges and focuses on their world rather than their relationship

I wasn't comfortable with the white narrator's use of the n-word, even in quotes, or with the white author's use of "the Blacks" in her own text. I thought about continuing anyway but ultimately wasn't feeling it.
