Nog zo'n boek dat al jaren in de kast staat. Ik heb het boek ooit gekregen op een Boeken Event in Utrecht toen ik zelf nog in Leiden woonde. Dat is ondertussen bijna 7 jaar geleden! In eerste instantie sprak het boek me niet aan. Het is een contemporary en het gaat over wandelen. Niet echt een onderwerp waar ik iets mee kan. Maar ik kon het boek toch niet wegdoen en bleef nieuwsgierig. En dus was het tijd om te kijken of het nu wel of niet iets voor me was.
Dit boek wist me uiteindelijk aangenaam te verrassend. Ik moet toegeven dat het grootste deel van het boek voor mij niet enorm bijzonder was, we krijgen een verslag van de hoofdrolspelers die aan het wandelen zijn, de gesprekken die ze hebben, de rugzakken (letter en figuurlijk) die ze bij zich dragen en de mensen die ze tegenkomen. Maar, het laatste deel van het boek maakt eigenlijk wel enorm veel goed door de levenslessen die de karakters leren.
En hoewel het eerste deel van het boek dus in mijn ogen niet zo bijzonder was, heb ik me met dit boek ook geen seconden verveeld. Dat komt met name omdat het boek heel lekker en vlot geschreven is. De zinnen zijn niet al te lang, de gebruikte woorden niet al te moeilijk. Het boek is daardoor heel toegankelijk, zeker voor de doelgroep waarvoor het boek geschreven is. Daarnaast bevat het boek hele realistische gebeurtenissen en elementen.
Wat voor mij nog wel echt wat had kunnen toevoegen aan dit boek, was een wat uitgebreidere beschrijving van de omgeving. Hoewel heel veel natuurlijk benoemd wordt, had ik het idee dat het boek geschreven is voor mensen die eigenlijk wel een beeld bij deze beroemde trail hebben. Ik als Nederlander heb dat totaal niet en voor mij was het lastig om me echt een beeld te vormen van de omgeving, de mogelijke gevaren en de risico's.
Maar, het boek krijgt in elk geval wel een definitief plaatsje in de kast en gaat niet op de weggeefstapel.

Het boek was super leuk, maar het einde stelde mij enorm teleur.

Ge-wel-dig inspirerend boek! Zoals op de achterkant staat: als je dit boek uit hebt wil je niets liever dan net als McKenna 3500 kilometer gaan lopen. Ik heb elke letter met zoveel plezier gelezen en wil echt vaker dit soort boeken lezen!!

This is the story of McKenna and the adventure she has on the Appalachian Trail as a thru-hiker. What she had planned to be a hike with her best friend, soon changes. She ends up heading on the trail alone and meets Sam. Sam has a troubled past, that soon results in some interesting experiences on the trail.

I really liked this book actually I though it was informative and super interesting, McKenna was very relatable and had an interesting character arc, I think she was a *tinsy* bit predictable but aren't we all?
I enjoyed all the information about the Appalachian Trail, it makes you want to hike and to embark on then journey from Maine to Georgia that McKenna did, a huge accomplishment. I also liked the characters background and how Gessner established the difference between both McKenna and Sam and their perspectives on life. Sam was a fun character a bit confusing at time simply based on the fact that he was so back and forth with his emotions but I've never been in his position to understand how it feels to be a child of abuse.
I think the novel as a whole could do with more range in story or even lengthening to get more of a conclusion of the story like a scene back at home or in college, is she still communicating with Sam? Do they ever reunite? Do their paths ever cross again, I'd just love to know if there was some real and true conclusion to their story. I'm a sucker for happy endings and while the ending wasn't necessarily unhappy it felt inconclusive.
OOO AND I felt like Sam and McKenna's relationship was a little rushed, and I know, there's a lot of interaction we don't get to see because of time jumps but I feel like since they only had small interactions with each other along the trail it felt very rushed that they jumped into a relationship so quickly. I also don't think we got a solid resolve of Sam's past conflict, it's mentioned by him even now and then and it's acknowledged by McKenna every now and again but it's rarely mentioned to be resolved and more so to just give sympathy for Sam and the way he acts, I think that- as well as the ending, should have been more conclusive and resolved by the end of the novel.
Overall this novel is cute and it gives a good story that keeps you really intrigued (I did finish it in a span of two days..) I think it could've just used a bit more resolution and a bit less unnecessary dialogue or story.
