This rating is lower than I thought it would be. The first book I felt generally positive about. I went through it very quickly. I was pretty immersed in the plot and really liked the characters. This book though, just.. didn’t work?
It took me legitimately a month to read this. This book is not that long and has decently spaced out text on the page. The fact that it took me so long says a lot, and I couldn’t fully tell you why. It just sat on my nightstand and I didn’t feel drawn to read it. When I got into the groove of the story I was ok, but it took me a lot to get through this.
I did like the addition of the character Harini in this book. Her teaching Adraa how to cast despite being voiceless was really nice. It seemed symbolic.
I’m not obsessed with the love interest, he’s pretty mediocre. However, he did have one quote that made me smile. Jatin said: “You’re terrifying, Adraa Belwar. And I’m so in love with you.” That quote redeemed him and this book a bit.

Bound by Firelight was the perfect conclusion to this beautifully engaging duology! I absolutely loved Cast in Firelight, but this one was somehow even better. I loved seeing Adraa and Jatin’s relationship and feelings develop, even while separated. Speaking of being separated, this is usually a trope I don’t care for, however I found it very well done in this case. Since their romance was quite a whirlwind in book 1, it was nice to see them work through their feelings along the way. As with the previous book as well, the side characters were distinctive and well fleshed out with their own needs, feelings, and beliefs. The plot twists and revelations were A+ and never predictable. The world and magic system were also so well written, it is very easy to get lost in both of these books! Also, the covers are GORGEOUS.
