As we follow Celie, we have a full view of life as the underdog, the person taken for granted, the overlooked and unloved. However, it becomes evident that this is the one person who is needed most, because this person is the mirror for everyone else. Questions of religion, gender, sexuality, and race are weaved into the journey just as they are in real life. The characters are real, vulnerable, strong, and human. A must read gor those who like to dig into the real (ugly) truth of human nature.

I absolutely loved the growth in the relationships between the characters as the characters developed themselves. A lot of characters went from enemies to friends or lovers, and in a slow, respectful way. It was especially interesting to see the relationships between the women in the book and how they all supported each other and worked together despite issues with the men in their lives or having shared partners. It was a true example of sisterhood and women uplifting other women.
I found the relationship between Celie and Albert especially interesting, as Celie initially resented him and he abused her, yet at the end, after she became more assertive and him more reflective and mature, they became friends.

When 14 years old, Celie begins writing letters to God. About being raped by her father, the death of her mother, herself getting married to a widower, falling in love with a female singer - and about the life as person of colour in the southern USA in the first half of the 20th century.

Written in an emotional but at the same time very direct and matter-of-fact way in the southern dialect, one can not avoid asking oneself how many people must have lived through parts of this fictional story. And still do.
