"Did you find any of the characters loveable ?"

The two sisters and that was it. Sam annoyed me and the Sheriff got on my nerves too.

I had come into this expecting it to be somewhat different from the movie and although Hitchcock changed around some things (example, in the book they remind us ten times a chapter that Norman is fat) and swapped him out for pretty boy Anthony Perkins.

It fits for film,  but i think both work out well. book and film, it would be nice to see a version even more faithful to this book. I was locked in suspense from the moment I opened the first chapter due to Norman's unholy trilogy internal monologues.
10/10

Upon watching Hitchcock's classic a dozen times and a recent obsession with NBC's Hannibal, I simply had to read this book. If your in the mood for something dark and utterly horrifying do continue. I highly advise, if you are faint of heart, sitting this one out.

Such a good read, but I do think that Sam was a less interesting character than Lila and I wish we got to read more from her perspective and less from his.

Maybe it's just that I'm one of the desensitized masses, but this book wasn't as bloody or murdery as I wanted it to be. While plenty suspenseful and certainly a detailed look into a deranged mind, I found the descriptions of the murders to fall short of my bloodthirsty expectations. This book is a slow burn to a fraught conclusion, much like the same build-up that Hitchcock created in the film adaptation. Perhaps some of the fact that the violence happens more "off-camera" is a product of the time when the book was written--a time, I suppose, when readers were titillated by the mere suggestion of violence rather than a detailed description of it. The real horror in this book comes from the complete mental degradation of the villain--Norman Bates is a textbook case of mommy issues gone totally awry. I definitely enjoyed reading this book, but I wasn't scared by it. So if it's real visceral thrills you are looking for, this is not the book for you. If a suspenseful, psychological mystery is what you're in the mood for, you couldn't do much better than this classic.
