So creepy. Worth the (short) read, even if you’ve seen &/or prefer the movie.

It might be because I watched the movie first - years ago - and loved Bates Motel, but this was underwhelming in comparison to both. I can see why they made other content from the IP, it’s interesting but this is the least interesting telling of it. The 16th chapter is just info dumping that could probably have been completely cut, with a little about the letter writing but added in the main body of the book so we get that there was the change while he wrote the letter.
Generally not the best book to be my first book back reading men again. (I’ve only been reading books by women for about three years(?)). This guy clearly has never spoken to a woman, and has only creepy things to say about them.
The one redeeming factor is the final chapter. First time a final chapter has redeemed a book so much, still only two stars though…honestly considering reducing that.

4.5*
My first read for 2017 and a great way to start the year.
Everyone knows the story about Norman Bates and his mother issues but it was interesting to listen to the audio and view the story through a different medium. The narrator was William Hootkins and I whilst a couple of the character voices didn't work for me I thought he was creepy and disturbing as Norman/mother.
This is a very short book and it only took me just over three hours to finish the audiobook. The pacing is quick without being frenetic, the different povs giving balance to the storyline but it's Normans story that pulls you in.
The story skips along nicely until the end and that's when it starts to get really creepy, the end scenes give new meaning to the word disturbing.
Classic horror that was great fun to read.

I was kind of worried it'd be a super dry classic but it was so good!
It definitely shows it's age though
