This classic did not disappoint! It ranks up there with Rosemary's Baby in how closely the movie follows the source material. This was a really quick read and I loved the interaction between Norman and Mother. I still think the film might edge out the book if I had to choose a favorite, and that's down to Hitchcock and Anthony Perkins, but just by a slim margin.

This classic is a perfect Halloween read.
Never thought there was a book, I simply always loved the movie. The book doesn't disappoint; probably my favorite classic I've read so far.

“We’re all not quite as sane as we pretend to be.”
Norman Bates is an utterly fascinating character. He is the epitome of a dark, psychologic thriller writing style. He is ravaging and monstrous. He is a terror of unbridled violence while remaining alluring and offering a dangerous promise of something sinister hiding under the surface. To check into the Bates Motel is to buckle up and brace for impact at the turbidity of his thoughts, the tension of his world as it falls apart, and the jolt of final secrets being revealed. This novel is short, complex, fast-paced, suspenseful, and everything you need in a classic horror novel. So much to dive into while being under 200 pages! Truly, this is a worthwhile read regardless of how you feel about the movie or TV adaptation and is a standout in American horror fiction.
