It took me a while to truly get into this book, but in typical SJM Fashion I was hooked in the second half. The first section was a lot of world building for a new continent and new character introductions. My favorite of the series so far.
I really hated manors story arc in the beginning. I didn’t like her until she saved Petrah near the end. But every time the thirteen showed up I wanted to stop reading. Love love love Rowan though and this did have a good twist with Sorscha that I didn’t see coming.

I cried reading this book. The story is great and i loved the characters. The POVs change but it’s great. Typical for a Sarah J. Maas book: the last 100 pages everything’s on fire.

Assassins, kingdoms, magic, wyvern, witches, an underdog, an evil aunt, mixed loyalties, a secret romance, long lost cousins, etc. What more could you need?

Amazing!! I devoured this book and I can’t wait for the next one. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I thoroughly enjoyed following every perspective and am so excited to see where these characters go from here.

This is the first book in the series where I found myself caring slightly about Celaena, even though she spends the majority of the book being insufferable. It isn't until about 2/3 of the way through that she has a breakthrough and finds herself making progress in her life.

Having said that, I still found everyone else's stories much more interesting than Celaena's.  I'm a fan of Aedion, and the witches were a great side plot to read.

Some of Celaena's flashback scenes were tough/emotional to read, but in the end, she gets where she needs to go. Mostly.

Very worth getting through the second book to enjoy this one! The threads weave together wonderfully in this world as the history and current machinations come together. We (finally) get a lot of character development from our favs, and a lot less annoyingly clunky exposition from a ghost queen and a door knocker from Queens. Rowan is obviously the high point. In a genre littered with hot/brooding/grumpy teachers paired with tiny/mouthy/stubborn women training their wild power, Rowan and Aelin’s growing relationship strikes a great balance. There’s tension, but more importantly there’s trust.
I really appreciated that this book dialed down the romance a bit.
