“People had long memories. No matter how many years passed, he would always be the subject of whispers and innuendos.”

I love myself a good Harlan Coben story, so when I discovered I could read one for one of the missing states for the 50 US States Bookish Travel challenge I was stoked. Sadly, The Innocent didn't exactly live up to my previous experiences with his work, and I was a bit underwhelmed by it all. The premise of this particular stand-alone is intriguing enough, and since his book tend to be on the farfetched side I wasn't really bothered by that either. It's just that the characters themselves lacked fleshing out this time around, and somehow I wasn't as invested in what would happen to them. I wasn't sure what happened with the writing either... It might have been that the second person POV start threw me off, which is something I truly despise. But somehow it didn't feel like the usual engaging and fast-paced Harlan Coben to me, and I don't think it was up to his usual standards. Sure, it's not a bad read and the story is 'fine'. It just never had me on the edge of my seat or fully hooked either. I also guessed some of the twists early on, and some of the other reveals were somehow quite annoying or underdeveloped (I don't want to give away spoilers, but for example the whole Connecticut angle). If you haven't read Harlan Coben yet, I wouldn't suggest starting with this title as you might not want to pick up another any time soon... If you are already a fan, this story might still be amusing enough to try.
