Friend recommended this book to me knowing that I love both terrible gay erotica and thrillers with bad twists, but oh boy, the title is good advice for any would-be reader. I think I made it five or six chapters deep before I gave up, and further reviews of this book assured me that there was nothing worth sticking around for.
Madeleine Urban is apparently in the process of re-editing and republishing the book. I'm mildly interested to see what the finished product of that will be like, if only because this copy reads so obviously as the two authors' unedited roleplay. Perspective changes between characters every line or paragraph, and some scenes include utterly unnecessary descriptive detail, which works when you need to pad an RP response for your friend and not so much when you are writing a book for publication.

I picked this up because book 6 in this series won DABWAHA this year, and seemed to have some pretty serious fans.
I did not enjoy this book.
The mystery itself was second rate (you guys work for the FBI and it took you that long to figure it out?)
The book was about 300 pages too long, the main characters were caricatures of the kind of characters they were supposed to be, the dialogue was terrible and the POV switching between both of the main characters was too fast and abrupt.
I can see why this is a popular series, though. Ty and Zane are both likeable enough characters, and I think I see where the authors were trying to go with this.
However, it felt more like bad fan-fic at times, and the sex and tension read as a fetishized version of what it should be. The conversations the two of them had bordered, at times, on the utterly ridiculous and unbelievable. Again - much of this read as a kind fetishized stylizing of male romance and sex.
Generally, I can see why people like this book (and the series). It reminded me a bit of a half-built house. It has good bones, but needs a hell of a lot of work before someone can move in.
That's what Cut and Run is like. There is a good story, good dynamic and good characters under all the rest of it, however, it failed on execution.

This book is a huge fucking mess. I genuinely could not distinguish our two leads from one another at almost any given point in the novel, as it would rapidly switch between their POV's without any real reason or warning. For about half the book I was almost certain Zane was the one who'd been in the marines, but then a random line flew in to tell me no, it was Ty who was in the marines. Everything was incredibly confusing and poorly organized and I guessed who the killer was roughly .08 seconds after he was introduced. I don't think this book was particularly sexy, either, especially because Ty and Zane are so similar it felt like I was reading about osmosis rather than a sex scene, so I really, truly don't understand all the glowing praise and reviews this book has received. I am reading the second one at this very moment (because I'm a dummy and I forgot to pick out something else to listen to tonight) and it's markedly better in that the POV doesn't switch in such a disorienting manner, but it isn't bringing anything too special to the table.

I gave up.
It seems gay men and straight women are looking for different things in a romance. I forget or ignore this once a year and pick up a book about gay men written by a woman, or Josh Lanyon.
I got half way through this. The level of innuendo got to be insane. The mystery took a back bench, then got moved further back. I kept thinking, they don't have to pay for the action scenes, they're free, it's not being filmed, so why are they so infrequent?
The banter between the two men goes on for pages and pages and pages. When it was finally resolved with sex after five hours of listening it was not fulfilling to me and I didn't see the need to continue.
