Okay, so I loved this book until about halfway through, when it sort of lost steam. I kept on reading, though, just to see what happened. It's an interesting time period and setting, and the premise of the novel was good, but by the end I wasn't sure if I could root for any of the characters or not. And I need someone to root for.

I picked this book up at random off the library shelves, and enjoyed it immensely.

Good story - the last half kind of drags, but I really like the complexity of the characters.

Up until I was 3/4 of the way through I was pretty sure that I'd give this book 3 stars, but then Nell's daughters showed back up. From that point on the book devolved into a torrid soap opera with many pointless scenes that seemed ill conceived and awkward. I guess it was inevitable that they'd show back up, but I certainly wish it had been handled differently.
